Does anyone know how to get real insurance in California? Not MediCal, but something generally accepted without a huge wait list? I'm lost and paying a lot out of pocket that I don't have. Or maybe not even state specific insurance, but some kind of national plan, specifically one that covers prescription drugs, doctor visits and vision? For individuals? Any ideas on where to start looking? I am totally clueless.

I think Kaiser is fairly inexpensive but also kind of crappy, as it's the Cal. equivalent of Group Health. If you're being paid under the table, and/or can report a very very small income (in S.D. it was $600 a month or under), you can apply for county medical assistance. It takes a while to go through, but is retroactively applied. It covers most everything.
